Shopping here falls into two distinct types: central area markets adjacent to squares offering gifts, dates, perfumes and carpets, and out-of-central malls with brands, restaurants and family entertainment that require a car. The first you walk between two prayers, the second takes half a day.

Most write about hotels by 'distance from the Haram', which is a partial measure. The squares are walled and have entrances, so a hotel near the edge of the square can still be far from the door you actually need, because you go around the wall and do not cross it.
The correct measure is two distances: walking distance to the nearest men's door, and walking distance to the nearest women's door. The family needs both. The men’s doors are King Saud Gate No. 8 to the west, King Fahd Gate No. 21 to the north, and King Abdulaziz Gate No. 34 to the east. The women's doors are four: Sultan Abdulmujid Gate No. 13 to the north-west, Omar Bin Al-Khattab Gate No. 17 to the north, Osman Bin Affan Gate No. 25 to the north-east, and Ali Bin Abi Talib Gate No. 29 to the east.
The Rawdah Al-Sharifa has a separate calculation: the eastern women’s prayer hall is entered through Gates 25 and 29, and visiting it is by appointment via the Nusuk app. A good hotel for the northern western women’s prayer hall might be far from the Rawdah’s door, and those visiting the Rawdah specifically need the eastern side.

Best time to visit Madina is from November to March, when the heat drops to a level comfortable for walking between the hotel and the Haram in the afternoon.
The climate is arid desert: a long hot summer, and a mild day and cool night in winter. The contrast between seasons changes the entire visit experience, as much of it is outdoors in the squares. In summer the squares are misted and shaded, but midday hours remain tough for the elderly and children.
And crowd seasons are not tied to the weather: Ramadan, the last ten nights, Hajj season, and school holidays raise prices and lengthen queues at the doors regardless of the weather.
Madina Airport: arrival and transfer to the hotel
Prince Mohammed bin Abdulaziz International Airport is Madina’s only airport, about 15 kilometers from the central area.
The airport is east of the city, and the road to the central area is fast outside peak hours. Three transfer options: ride-hailing apps, taxi cabs from the airport, and hotel transfer service, with many central hotels offering it by advance booking. The latter is more comfortable if you arrive at night or with family and luggage.
If your trip is part of a Umrah program, transfer is usually arranged in advance, but confirm the drop-off point: some buses drop passengers at a collection point, not at the hotel door, adding walking with luggage.

The central area is all on foot; anything outside it requires a car or ride-hailing app as outer destinations are spread out.

The Haramain high-speed train links the two holy sites over 450 kilometers at speeds up to 300 km/h; the journey between Madina station and Mecca station takes about two to two and a half hours depending on stops. It has five stations: Mecca, Jeddah Governorate, King Abdulaziz International Airport, King Abdullah Economic City, and Madina.
This opens two options for programs including the two Haram sites: arriving by air at one airport and traveling between them by train, or entering from one airport and exiting at the other. Madina station is outside the central area and requires a transfer to the hotel, so factor this into a travel day.
